Ms. McGee's second graders researched their family's heritage, and then created a representational doll out of clothes pegs. But they weren't quite finished. As a final project, the students uploaded pictures of their dolls into a PowerPoint Slide where they summarized their research. Second graders were working on research skills using the Dell Netbooks in the classroom. Students were able to follow teacher movements in the World Book Online research resource. Being able to apply individually and immediately what they see and learn helps students reinforce and strengthen technology and research skills. One afternoon in March, before packing up to go home, Ms. Bray's second graders had the opportunity to chat with a couple New Zealanders who were having their breakfast just before heading off to school. Using Skype and the classroom document camera and projector, students were able to ask questions about school and food and time differences between Texas and New Zealand. Keeping learning real and engaging in second grade! Ms. Galyon's second grade class published their Spider diamante poems in Microsoft Word. The students gained word processing skills such as centering text and changing font size and type for a specific purpose. Diamante poetry also requires language and grammar skills including knowledge of many parts of speech, such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, and phrases. The students collaborated with their fifth grade buddies to write the poems and then published them on their own. Ms. Bertul’s 2nd grade students accessed the internet using our Dell Netbooks on Friday, September 14. After logging in using their personal usernames and passwords, students navigated to Ms. Bertul’s TeacherWeb page and browsed her links. They chose from a variety of websites – Reading, Math, or Science and Social Studies. Ms. Bertul has created a valuable list of websites that support learning both at home and in the classroom. |
